Aditional Resources

There are three main types of diabetes. The causes and risk factors are different for each type:
Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age but is most often diagnosed in children, adolescents or young adults. In this disease, the body makes little or no insulin and daily injections are needed for this hormone. The exact cause is unknown.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for the majority of cases of diabetes. It usually occurs in adulthood, although it is now being diagnosed in adolescents and young adults due to high rates of obesity. Many people with this type of diabetes are unaware they have this disease.
Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that occurs at any time during pregnancy in a woman without diabetes.
There is no cure for diabetes. Treatment involves medicines, diet and exercise to control blood sugar and prevent symptoms and problems.
